Medical Resiliency and CRM
The Wings of Innovation & Resilience Organizational Consulting (WiRoC) places number one in the Google, Yahoo, and Bing search engines under the keyword search: Medical Resiliency and CRM (Crew Resource Management). According to evidence-based research (Subhedar & Parry, 2009), “Although relatively new in the field of health care, incident reporting systems have been successfully used in other high-risk industries, particularly aviation” (p. 378). Other research (Mahajan, 2010) notes, “Investigation of critical incidents was first used in the 1940s by Flanagan (1954) as a technique to improve safety and performance among military pilots” (p. 69). Drawing a evidence-based connection from military aviation, Mahajan (2010) writes, “Departments of anesthesia now have systems in place to record and discuss adverse incidents and near misses and seek to improve patient safety by learning from these incidents” (p. 69). There are important high-risk aviation practices and lessons learned, specifically in the areas of safety, leadership, team building, and human factors tools that could be applied in the high-risk health care industry to reduce medical errors, reduce malpractice litigation, enhance medical team communication and interactions, and ultimately help improve patient safety and care.
